The Cat In The Hat Builds That: Interactive App Design
Designing the award-winning Dr. Seuss learning app The Cat In The Hat Builds That in collaboration with PBS KIDS, Penguin Random House, and Curious Media was a rare opportunity to merge storytelling, interactive design, and STEM education inside one of the most iconic animated worlds in children’s media.
I developed interactive screens, UI systems, and environmental assets that translated the visual world of the PBS KIDS animated series The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That! into an immersive learning experience built around creativity, exploration, and problem-solving. The Cat In The Hat Builds That went on to receive a Webby Award for Best Family & Kids App and a Games for Change Award for Best Learning App.
Interactive Educational UX/UI
I designed interactive activity flows and educational UI systems that guided young users through hands-on STEM challenges, experimentation prompts, and at-home learning extensions integrated directly into gameplay.
Activity Selection Flow
Users could browse STEM activities through color-coded navigation and character-led interaction cues.
Guided Experiment Prompts
Each activity included interactive instructions designed for independent exploration and at-home learning.
INTERACTIVE ACTIVITY STATES
Selecting an activity revealed contextual tools, prompts, and guided learning interactions within the gameplay environment.
The Engineering Design Process Wheel
I designed a custom Dr. Seuss version of the Engineering Design Process Wheel, transforming the widely used STEM learning framework into an interactive in-app feature that guided young users through the fundamentals of creative problem-solving and engineering thinking.
The Engineering Design Process Wheel was integrated directly into the app environment as an interactive learning tool, allowing users to explore each phase of the engineering process through intuitive navigation, visual storytelling, and guided interaction.
