The Cat In The Hat Builds That: App Screens and UI Design
Life truly comes full circle when you find yourself designing an app for Dr. Seuss as an adult. 'The Cat In the Hat Builds That' received a Webby for Best Family & Kids App and a Games For Change award for Best Learning App, and I had the pleasure of collaborating with PBS Kids and Penguin Random House in partnership with Curious Media to design and develop this award-winning learning app.
I crafted interactive screens and layouts with UI elements and environmental background components that faithfully mirrored the look and feel of the existing animated television show, "The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That." This translated into a user-friendly Dr. Seuss world of interactive fun and lessons in STEM and problem-solving.
The Engineering Design Process Wheel
I developed a 'Cat In The Hat' version of the well-known Engineering Design Process Wheel—a pop-up feature within the app's adventure. It acts as a guide for young engineers, from Pre-K and beyond, to understand the steps and processes of problem-solving.
The Engineering Design Process Wheel is seamlessly integrated into the app's user interface (UI) for easy access and navigation. The process is simple:
1—Users can find it by selecting an icon located within the treehouse environment.
2—Upon tapping the icon, a pop-up window appears, displaying the interactive wheel.
3—From there, users can choose specific sections of the wheel to explore further, allowing for an engaging and educational experience."
